Utilize the EBPAS as software tool to provide
an enterprise-wide rule-set repository that recognizes complex
events and initiates the appropriate actions in response,
i.e., workflow. Enable your subject-matter-experts
to create business rules that classify events into extremely
fine-grained categories, and specify appropriate actions
to be taken in response to each complex event.
Example: Northeast Blackout of 2003
The 2003 Northeast Blackout was caused
not by a single component failing, but a complex chain
of events that initiated a cascade effect. Failure
of one component placed stress on another, causing it
to fail as well. As each grid failed, it shifted
the excessive demand to the next, which failed in turn.
If a system had been in place to recognize the events
as they happened and interrupted the chain by taking a
component offline, the majority of the blackout might
well have been avoided.
This is an example of the type of problem
the EBPAS was designed to address. When an event occurs,
it analyzes the event in its high-speed rules engine to
determine exactly what the event is and the appropriate
response action to take. Had the EBPAS been in place within
the grid control systems, the grid control systems might
well have been able to proactively isolate the overloaded
grids, localizing the outage to a small area rather than
allowing it to propagate throughout the entire Northeast.
