The EsDS for Security allows you to capture not what resources each user is allowed to access, but rather to define via rules, what an authorized user of a specific resource looks like. This means that each time a user attempts to access a protected resource, the rule associated with that resource is evaluated against the user’s personal characteristics as well as transactional or situational information to determine whether access should be granted. For example, assume that a customer is applying for a discounted pricing structure for a large order. The software tool would load the rule associated with that discount structure, and evaluate the customer’s characteristics to determine whether they met the criteria to be granted the use of the discount structure, based upon virtually any known criteria about the customer (demographics, purchase history, credit rating, account standing, etc.), the sales situation (location of store, on-hand inventory, projected demand, mix of items purchased), or even external real-time items (forecasted weather, monetary exchange rates, etc.) While the access control rules themselves can be made sensitive to highly complex or volatile items, the net result is simple — the customer is granted access to only the resources which are advantageous for the retailer to offer. Currently, security is managed on an application-by-application basis. From the ground up, the EsDS for Security is built for distributed administration of the security policies, allowing the owners of the resources being managed to directly control the policies defining access throughout the enterprise. Real-Time Alarms Allow “Right-Now” Response to Inappropriate Requests — When a request is denied for any reason, the EsDS for Security provides a mechanism whereby an alarm condition may be delivered to a system responsible for notifying individuals or components to respond to the event. For example, assume an employee is attempting to access a secured resource that is highly sensitive: sensitive enough that any denied request should initiate an alarm. Within the tool’s security policy definition process, an option is available to cause an alarm condition to be raised upon denial. At run-time, when the user’s access attempt is denied, the EsDS for Security generates an alarm message which details the user’s identity, the resource requested, and the reasons for the denial; then delivers it to a system of your choice.
